Celebrating the life of
Leonora Carolyn Huguenin Victor
November 22, 1921 - October 02, 2010
Savannah, Georgia – Leonora "Noni" Carolyn Huguenin Victor, 88, died peacefully at home in Savannah on October 2, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Dr. Jules Victor, Jr. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.
Born in Valdosta, GA, Leonora spent her childhood on Roseland Plantation, Coosawhatchie, S.C., the ancestral home of her father, Edward Percy Huguenin, Jr. She graduated from Ridgeland High School and attended the nursing program at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Florida. While there she met her beloved husband, to whom she was happily married for 64 years.
Leonora was an active member of St. John's Church in Savannah. There, she served as President of the Chancel Society; on the executive board of the Women of St. John's; as a member of the Wardens and Vestry of St. John's; on the diocesan board of the Episcopal Youth and Children Foundation; and was instrumental in establishing a preservation fund. A woman of impeccable taste, Noni co-chaired the 1970's renovation of St. Mary's Chapel located at St. John's Church. Her love of Savannah and its history motivated her to work for the Telfair Museum of Art as a docent at the Owens-Thomas house for fifteen years. Inspired by her work there, she proposed a plan for the Women of St. John's to open the church's Green-Meldrim House for public tours, a practice that continues decades later. Noni and Jules traveled extensively representing St. John's Church for more than twenty years at Georgia diocesan conventions and national Episcopal conventions.
Leonora was a member of the First Families of South Carolina, The Huguenot Society, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, and The Daughters of The American Revolution, where she served as Regent of the Savannah Chapter. She was a former member of the Chatham Club and the Savannah Golf Club, and a past-President of the Women's Medical Auxiliary. She participated in numerous book, garden and music clubs throughout her life.
She is survived by her children: Carol Ann Erwin George, Dr. Jules Victor III, Barbara, and Neil Huguenin Victor, Sr. Patti; nine grandchildren: Cynthia P. Spradlin Joseph, Alicia P. Workman Shawn, Courtney Buntin Victor, Leonora Victor, Jules Victor, IV, Steven Fries Victor Terri, Neil H. Victor, Jr., and Meredith V. Zipperer Chris; brother-in-law, Dr. Irving Victor Cissy; and ten great-grandchildren. Noni was a beautiful and loving mother to her entire family and will be greatly missed. She will be remembered for her graciousness and generous hospitality to all who knew her. She was truly the quintessential Southern Lady and will never be forgotten. Thank you to the many caregivers and friends who have sustained Noni in the past months. Our special thanks go to Mrs. Linda Sifford and Ms. Tonya Scott for their extraordinary care and companionship.
Funeral services will be held at St. John's Church on Thursday, October 7, at 11:30, The Rev. Gavin G. Dunbar, officiant, assisted by The Rev. Craig E. O'Brien. The family will receive friends following the service in the Green-Meldrim House.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. John's Church, 1 W. Macon St., Savannah, GA 31401; THA Group Island Hospice, or Saint Joseph's Hospital Foundation, Savannah.
She was a lovely lady, a fantastic mom and the most genteel of southern ladies. She will be truly missed. Our condolences to the surviving family. Rose, Gabrielle & Morgan Jones
